Up To Speed – The Urgent Challenge For Online Bingo

A recent report from Ofcom found that the UK is a market leader in digital technologies, with a massive 88% of the population enjoying digital television. While this is the highest proportion amongst the countries surveyed, the regulator found that Britain is falling behind when it comes to broadband speed.

This means that while we are free to watch game shows on the tube in crystal clarity, the fastest-growing game enjoyed on our monitors is potentially faltering.

Online bingo is fast becoming as popular in Europe as it is in Britain. Sweden, Germany, Fance and Spain all have thriving industries, an unsurprising fact considering that it is originally a continental game. Yet as innovation drives technological advancement and graphics improve, placing 21st out of 30 countries in broadband speed could potentially damage the ability of players in the UK to enjoy the game as much as their European neighbours. With only 10% of the nation able to connect at over 8 Mbps this more than likely leaves many of the 3.5 million regular bingo players (which equates to around 5% of the population) frustrated at the lack of action.

As online casinos use increasingly high-tech computer graphics to simulate the atmosphere of a real casino, online bingo halls are likely to follow suit. The online game itself already beats the gameplay and sociability of traditional bingo halls, so the improvement of the visual aspect of the game is logically the next in line for renovation.

Fortunately for the players in the UK, Ofcom has stepped up to the challenge facing their favourite game. The industry regulators have established a scheme to ensure that broadband speeds reach next generation before the UK falls too far behind.

A spokesman from Ofcom stated, “We are pleased to see that some companies have already started investing in high speed broadband networks”.

With a surge in online gaming each time a technological advancement ensues, the nation's bingo providers are readying themselves for the next increase. When Internet poker hit the proverbial big time it coincided with the inception of widespread broadband capability and with online bingo enjoying a similar renaissance it is now set to follow in the footsteps of its big brother. With such massive potential for growth it is no surprise that gaming companies are reinventing their games in eagerness to be the first to cash in. Better gameplay means more gamers, and when it comes to a £600million industry more gamers only means one thing: increased revenue.

More money for the providers means the same for the bingo players and so, with the intended progress apparent, it becomes a not-so-vicious circle for all to enjoy.
