How do I play tight Poker?

Posted By Diego | WSOP News | November 5, 2009, 06:22 AM |

The way you win money when you
play poker
is by having your
chips in the pot when your odds are the best. One way to do this is by playing
"Tight." So what is tight
poker
?

Playing "tight" means exactly that. You are holding on very tightly to your
chips and only letting them go into the pot when you have very good hands. So
the first step to playing tight poker is to make sure you are being selective.

A tight Texas Holdem' player usually only plays a very specific group of hands.
The only cards you should be playing at first in poker games are hands where
both of your cards are ten and above pre flop. To play extra tight, make sure
that these two cards are suited, increasing your odds of hitting a flush and
increasing your odds of winning.

Discipline is a key to playing tight poker, and like anything else it takes
practice to perfect. I suggest that you enter a
free poker
room on one of the many
online poker sites as it is a low pressure environment in which to practice.
Make sure you only play hands with both cards being ten or higher pre flop. You
will see that you are folding the majority of the hands you are dealt. You may
get the urge to toss your lot in with a pair of twos or a suited ace nine, but
resist this. Twos and suited cards are playable hands, but they are not good for
beginners, and they are certainly not hands that a tight player would play. If
you stick to the plan, you will see more and more successful flops.

So you are playing tight pre flop. You have your money in with Ace ten of
Diamonds and.... Yuck!! What a terrible flop. What would a tight player do now?
Here is where the name "tight" can become a little deceiving, as it doesn't take
much to shake those premium cards out of a tight players hand after a bad flop
has come down.

Playing tight after the flop means that you are only going to put your money
into the pot when you have some kind of a hand. Preferably a - “made hand”;
which means no chasing after flushes or straights. Pairs and three of a kind are
usually what a tight player likes to see on the flop. Sometimes a tight player
will look for that last suited card, or look to make an open ended straight but
that’s about it.

Playing tight is a great way to learn how to win in a game of poker. Try your
luck online on some free
poker tournaments
, and make sure to have fun!
